The most important tool for protecting a corporate network from Internet intrusions is a firewall – an intelligent device that controls traffic between two or more networks for security purposes. In this chapter, Philip Carden examines firewall architectures. After looking at the difference between firewalls and a perimeter network, we explore the difference between three common firewall architectures – packet filters, proxy systems, and stateful inspection systems. Next, we look at some of the more advanced firewall features an organization may need.
