    4. SCSI ID8

  10. How many terminators are needed on a SCSI bus?
    1. 0
    2. 1
    3. 2
    4. 1 per device

  11. What enhancements were provided with the EIDE standard? Select all that apply.
    1. Supports hard drives larger than 504 MB
    2. Supports up to 4 hard drives
    3. Supports up to 2 hard drives
    4. Provides an ATAPI interface for support of tape drives and CD-ROMS

  12. Is the following statement true or false? All 72-pin SIMMs and 72-pin EDO SIMMs can be plugged into all motherboards that have 72-pin sockets.
    1. True
    2. False

  13. The case and power supply provide what to the computer?
    1. 5 and 12 Volts DC to all internal components of the PC and protection from the environment.
    2. 5 and 12 Volts AC to all internal components of the PC and protection from the environment.
    3. An internal battery backup power device used in the event of a power failure.
    4. An external battery backup power device used in the event of a power failure.

QUIZ ANSWERS
  1. A — All backplates should be installed to help keep the internal components of the computer cooler by allowing proper airflow through the air plenum of the case. Answer B is incorrect because you don’t want to increase the ambient heat around internal components. Answers C and D are wrong because the backplates have no effect on electrostatic discharge (ESD).
  2. A and D — The output voltage of a PC power supply provides 5 and 12 volts DC to the internal components on the PC; therefore, answers B and C are incorrect.
  3. C — The P8 and P9 connectors provide power to the motherboard and the black leads of the two connectors should be toward each other. Answer A is incorrect because the P8 and P9 connectors don’t provide power to the hard disk drive; Answer D is incorrect because the P8 and P9 connectors don’t provide power to the CD-ROM drive.
  4. C — The Socket 3 socket can accept only the 486 processor; however, the Pentium overdrive processor and some other brands of processors can also fit in the Socket 3 socket.
  5. B — Only Pentium chips can be plugged into the Socket 7 socket. The Pentium 90 chip, which was a short-lived version of Pentium chip, is the only exception to this general rule.
  6. B and D — The CMOS chip is battery powered and has a real-time clock that stores the date and time along with the hardware configuration information. Answers A and C are incorrect because the POST and a basic communications program are stored on the BIOS chip.
  7. A and C — The BIOS chip stores the POST and a small basic I/O program that allows the CPU to communicate with the peripheral devices. Answers B and D are incorrect because the time, date, and hardware configuration information are stored on the CMOS chip.
  8. A — Eight addresses, numbered from 0 to 7, are available on the SCSI bus.
  9. A — The SCSI host adapter (controller) ID should be set to 7. All other installed devices are set using ID numbers from 0 to 6.
  10. C — A SCSI bus has two ends and both ends must be terminated with a resistor pack. The devices that are connected to the SCSI bus have a passive connection; therefore, they do not need to be terminated.
  11. A, B, and D — The EIDE standard (ATA-2) provided several enhancements over the original IDE interface, including support for up to 4 devices, an ATAPI interface to support tape drives and CD-ROMs, and support for drives larger than 504 MB.
  12. B — Even though the sockets look the same, the motherboard must have additional circuitry to support the EDO technology; therefore not all motherboards can support EDO memory.
  13. A — The case and power supply protect the internal components of a computer and provide 5 volts DC and 12 volts DC to the motherboard and all internal components of the PC.

Describe the exterior environment of the system.
  1. Identify the Case and Power supply.
  2. Locate the power switch.
  3. Find the intake vents on the computer case.
  4. Locate the exhaust vent on the power supply.
Activity 2 — Interior Inspection
Identify the following components in the system.
  1. Locate the CPU and/or CPU socket.
