TABLE 10.5: File System Settings |
| Option |
Description |
Windows 95 or Windows 98? |
| Hard disk |
Determines the amount of RAM that will be used for caching. Network uses the most RAM and Desktop uses the least. Also, configures the amount of read-ahead caching performed in order to increase the speed of the hard disk. |
Both |
| Floppy disk |
Tells Windows 98 to search for new drivers from the floppy disk at boot. Clearing this checkbox reduces boot time because the OS wont check for new drivers. Mainly used for portable computers that boot from floppy disk. |
Windows 98 |
| CD-ROM |
Lets you configure the speed at which your CD-ROM drive operates. The settings you configure here define how much physical memory is used in support of the CD-ROM drive. |
Both |
| Removable disk |
Lets you enable or disable write-behind caching. Enabling this option could give you disk problems with removable media; however, enabling it also improves system performance because data is written to the disk when its utilization is low. |
Windows 98 |
| Troubleshooting |
Provides several troubleshooting checkboxes. These options are compatibility measures for older programs and hardware. These options should not be necessary for hardware or software produced in 1996 or later. If you are having trouble with certain hardware or software, the manufacturer may advise you to enable one of these items. |
